Welcome to the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. As a founder member of the USM Engineering Campus, we are one of the largest and most successful schools within the campus, with approximately 826 undergraduate and postgraduate students; 52 academic staff; and 38 administrative and technical staff. As such we are a home of a vibrant and diverse research community with activities spanning across the full range of electrical and electronic engineering spectrum.
The core of our activities surround the undergraduate and postgraduate courses that we now delivering through three major disciplines – (i) Electronic Engineering, (ii) Electrical Engineering and (iii) Mechatronic Engineering. We have received full accreditation for our undergraduate and master programmes from the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and, where appropriate, from the Malaysia Qualifying Agency (MQA). This year we yet again scored exceptionally well in the MQA rating systems for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia (SETARA) with an excellent Tier 5 category. Also the 2012 Graduate Survey produced a very encouraging result with more than 78 % of students indicated the highest level of satisfaction.
The IEEEXtreme 8.0 programming competition was conducted worldwide from 18 October to 19 October 2014. There are 2267 teams competing worldwide, 34 teams competing at National level and 6 teams were from Universiti Sains Malaysia. USM IEEE Student Branch had organized the event and the venue was took place at the Micro-computer Lab, School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, USM. During the 24 hours competition, the participants have been given 22 problems to be solved. It requires knowledge, brain storming and high commitment in solving the programming problem correctly and on time. There are 3 proctors who are the IEEE members also on duty to monitor the flow of the competition. Those are Dr. Muhammad Nasiruddin Mahyuddin, Dr. Rosmiwati Mohd Mokhtar and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharel Azmin Suandi. Technician on duty, Mr. Kamarulzaman Abu Bakar has also involved in making sure the technical aspects of the lab where the competition was conducted were problem free. Based on the results, 2 teams from USM obtained first and second place in Malaysia, and 95th and 332th at International level. Congratulations to the winning teams. Thank you to the Dean of School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Prof. Dr. Mohd Zaid Abdullah for giving a full support and trust for the students to participate in the competition.
A real gem amongst the jewels...
Yong Bang Ming entered the school just as other ordinary freshies i.e. instilling in himself high hopes and aspirations, intending to achieve the best of everything . Four years later, he did what he aspired to do on that day when he first set foot at the school. In fact, he has achieved even more. Indeed, his outstanding achievements have made us all, i.e. the school and the university, very proud and fortunate. Who wouldn’t be?
Not only has he garnered awards after awards, be it at the state, national and international level, he is the true epitome of a success story. He was also conferred as the recipient for the prestigious Chancellor’s Golden Award in conjunction with the university’s 48th convocation for excelling in all fields. In addition to that, he has also won the Royal Award for students given by the Council of Rulers (for non-Bumiputra category) and yet another award – Intel’s Golden Award for the Best Final Year Electronic Engineering Student Award who has excelled in all fields.
Yong Bang Ming is an exemplary student, whom other students may and can try to emulate. Throughout his entire undergraduate years, he has boosted our pride by winning the following:
The USM IEEE Student Branch has won the first prize award for the Best IEEE Student Branch for 2013, out of a total of 17 IEEE student branches registered throughout Malaysia.
