Dr. Wan Mohd Yusof Rahiman Wan Abdul Aziz

Wan Mohd Yusof Rahiman gained his undergraduate degree from Cardiff University specialising in Manufacturing Engineering (BEng). After working a few years in manufacturing industry at Panasonic Manufacturing Ltd in Cardiff and Lotus Cars Ltd in Norwich. He then completed control-engineering study in the Control System Centre, University of Manchester, with PhD in field of Fault Detection and Isolation for Pipeline Systems. Dr Wan Rahiman joined as a senior lecturer in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2009. His research interests lie in the area of modelling nonlinear systems and their controller algorithm on a wide range of development industrial projects, particularly, in drone and autonomous vehicle technologies. He endeavours to develop a smart electronics with Internet of Things (IoT) solution that could widely applied in the medical industry.

Project #1 title: Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) Navigation

Project summary: The AGV with free navigation is a new machine, which uses different techniques to move such as mapping, localization, path planning, and path following. In this project, a  method  for  the  localization  problem  of AGVs in  the framework of well-known Simultaneously Localization  and  Map Building  (SLAM)  problem. Nowadays localization techniques for industrial AGVs are also include specific Landmarks that brings big amount  of  precision  for  particularly  indoor  since  that  allow  sparse  mapping  without  future  extraction  efforts.  This  property is also useful  for implementation  of estimation  tools  such  as  Kalman  filtering.  The purposed project is based  on EKF  based  localization  of based  on  landmark detection, odometry  and  IMU  measurements  together.

Funding: Stipend support from RM2,500/month and Tuition fee will be paid by USM

Project #2 title: Vibration Analysis and Prediction

Project summary: Multirotors are generally quite robust to perform easy manoeuvre and this vehicle do not break easily. But since vibration occurs in multirotors because of technical issues, they are very exposed to flight instability that could lead to crash. Vibration will also affect your video quality. Even though many gimbals on the market today are designed to stabilize video for the best possible quality, small vibrations can cause harmonic noise in the video, which always be referred  to as “Jello”. This will not be noticeable from an FPV monitor, but once it appears at the HD video in postproduction.

Funding: Stipend will be paid from RM2,500/month and Tuition fee will be paid by USM
